Q&A

There are so many boycott lists, how do I know which to choose from?

There is an overwhelming number of possible products, companies, or institutions that can be boycotted based on their complicity with the genocidal, apartheid state of Israel. However to make the boycott both more feasible and effective, we encourage people to focus on a more limited, impactful set of targets.

This strategy is the one taken by the Palestinian BDS National Committee. They focus their campaign on a small number of companies and products for maximum impact.

At the same time, you can consider adapting your choices to fit your personal capacity and local availability. If you come across companies on other lists that have a clear connection to the Israeli regime and are prevalent in your community, including them can make your participation more impactful. Every action counts, and participating according to your capacity is valuable.

The Canadian BDS Coalition for example has an extensive list of companies and institution they invite people to boycott:

I am worried about putting up a sticker in my window some clients may be opposed to.

Announcing your participation in the boycott of Israel is an important political statement. Any political statement carries risks. These risks can be offset by enhanced solidarity from supportive customers.

If you are concerned about complaints, we encourage you to always emphasize a few key points:

- The BDS movement targets the Israeli state and complicit companies because of Israel's responsibility for serious violations of international law. The BDS movement does not boycott or campaign against any individual or group simply because they are Israeli, let alone if they are Jewish. Criticisms of violations of international law cannot be conflated with anti-Semitism.

- The BDS movement challenges the unprecedented support Israel receives from Western governments in shielding Israel from being held to account for its war crimes against Palestinians, allowing it to continue its colonial project without facing consequences. The BDS movement is working to end this exceptionalism and calls for Israel to be held to account according to the standards of international law.

How can I do more to help support the BDS campaign?

We encourage businesses and organizations to register themselves as Apartheid-Free Zones, a campaign that promotes the creation of spaces of proactive solidarity with the Palestinian people. For companies, this means committing to the boycott of Israeli and complicit products.

We also encourage you to share the stickers with fellow businesses and organizations who would like to participate in the campaign.
